NUUN Hydration Electrolytes
This summer, I had noticed that whenever I summited a big peak, backpacked for miles on end, or did a trail run at a high altitude, I noticed that I would start to feel light headed and weak. That is NOT something you want happening at 10,000 + feet! I would drink plenty of water, eat snacks, yet I still didn't feel 100%. I knew I needed something else, but wasn't sure what it could be.

My hiking friends suggested I look into drinking electrolytes. I knew about them, but had always thought they were for hard-core athletes - people running 50+ miles a day, climbing the tallest mountains, biking more than 100 miles, etc. I didn't think that being just a hiker would make that much of a difference. But I thought, what the heck, might as well try them and see if it helped with my lightheaded-ness. Learning that a mere 2% loss is body weight through sweat while exercising has been known to decrease exercise performance, I knew I had to find a solution.

While on the search for the best electrolytes in the outdoor industry, I came across a brand called NUUNPronounced like "noon", trying these electrolytes stood out to me for a few reasons.
NUUN Hydration Electrolytes
NUUN was the first company to separate electrolyte replacement from carbohydrates. I didn't even know doing this was a thing! In the old days, if you wanted electrolytes, the result was a bottle full of sugar (think Gatorade or orange juice). However, with NUUNs simple, self-dissolving, sugar-free electrolyte tabs they revolutionized the famous "sports drink." The electrolytes found in NUUN tablets help alleviate cramps, help muscles function better, as well as communicate and burn energy efficiently. By helping to keep you hydrated, NUUN products can help you achieve your outdoor goals - and it doesn't have to be for the hard-core athlete.

Using the NUUN tablets are pretty easy - all you have to do is drop one tablet into a 16oz water bottle and watch it fizz away. Within 1-2 minutes, your hydration drink is ready for any activity. No more messing with powders!

Each portable tube contains 10 tablets; only 8 calories per tablet. All NUUN products are gluten free, vegan, non-GMO, & nut free. NUUN is safe for children, pregnant women, and diabetics, but it's best to consult with your doctor before consuming.

I was able to test out four varieties of NUUN products - two Active, and two Energy flavors/tablets. Below are the reviews per flavor.
NUUN Hydration Electrolytes
Hike #1 Mt. Superior & Monte Cristo Peak
Flavor: NUUN Active Tri Berry
Review
Flavor
The Tri Berry flavor wasn't very sweet, and it tasted a little more carbonated than the other flavors. It was a very light taste - sometimes this is nice when you are hiking or running and can't stomach drinking something overly sweet.

Support/Active Ingredients
This light flavor combined with the ingredients below offer a portable active hydration drink with electrolytes to prevent muscle cramping, aid in muscle function, and burn energy efficiently.

Sodium (bicarbonate + carbonate)
Potassium (bicarbonate)
Magnesium (sulfate)
Calcium (carbonate)
Vitamin C (as ascorbic acid)

 Flavor: NUUN Energy Wild Berry
Review
Flavor
This was my second favorite flavor out of the 4 variations I tried. I love anything berry flavored, and this mix not only provided for the flavor I enjoy most, but it also provided me with the energy to keep pushing towards the peak.

Support/Ingredients
NUUN Energy contains caffeine from green tea extract, b-vitamins, and NUUN's signature blend of electrolytes. It's designed to give you a lift and provide for extra hydration, that helps keeps crams and muscle fatigue at bay. Since it contains caffeine, it may not be suitable for kids.

This was my favorite flavor out of the 4 variations I tried. Just the right amount of sweetness, and  there's just something about a cherry-limeade drink that reminds me of summer.

  1. Our daughter was a spokesperson for quite a while. She found Nuun tablets necessary with marathon training in the east with the humidity. We need to add these to our supplies. My husband suffered from dehydration while hiking one day in Capitol Reef NP. Thank goodness it hit as we were descending. It was a tough journey back. Neither of us has ever had a problem before.

    1. Dehydration is super scary! I've gotten elevation sickness a few times as well, and the NUUN products really seem to curb all side effects of various issues I've had on the trails. I'm really glad I found these electrolytes! - Alicia
