Foxelli MX500 Headlamp gear review, Best Headlights for hiking
Hate hiking in the dark? I certainly do. With the sunsets being so early, I usually get home around 5:30pm and its already dark. I love winter, but I can't stand the early nights. Plus, Charlie still needs to get a good walk in. The solution? A headlight that works. I've owned my fair share of headlights, and even if I replace the batteries, they always seem to die out on me after a few months. So I shopped around online, and found out that there are headlights out there that recharge via USB. That lead me to research the best USB rechargeable headlights. The winner?

This high-tech, USB rechargeable headlamp was designed for both professional outdoor enthusiasts as well as everyday users in any environment. Whether you are walking the dog around the neighborhood, running steep terrain up to peak, or training for a marathon during winter months, Foxelli will be there to help light the way.

One of the things I look for in a headlight is the brightness of the light. It will do no good having a headlight that is too dim. The Foxelli MX500 is ultra bright at 280LM. What does that mean? LM stands for Lumens, or how bright a light is. We can convert LMs to watts (think how light bulbs are measured) to know how bright something is. 280LM is equal to 4.6 watts. That would be a small light bulb, but perfect for a headlight light the trail for up to 120 meters (or 393 ft). This headlamp actually has four brightness settings 1) Ultra Bright 280 LM 2) Bright 200LM 3) Average 90 LM and 4) Minimum 12LM. You can also switch from a wide beam to narrow beam/ So whatever your environment, you can pick a brightness setting that works for you.

The reason you can open and close this piece, is so it can act as a light diffuser.

The headlight body also tilts up to 90 degrees, allowing you to focus as much as as needed.

I like that Foxelli headlight not only has the elastic band that fits the circumference of your head, but also sits over the top of your head. This creates great stability whether you are running or jumping - no slipping, bunching, or worse, falling off. The center, over-the-head, strap is removable. I would suggest if you are running that you may want to keep it on for extra stability. You don't really need it for regular hiking.

Because this is recharged via USB, it only takes a full 2 hours to recharge. The lithium-ion batter has a lifetime up to 100 hours. If you are a backpacker, you'll be happy to learn this headlight weighs a mere 4.4 ounces and is water resistant. Worried about the headlight falling off during a run? No worries there - the MX500 headlight is impact resistant (note: not impact proof). In case of an emergency, the headlight comes with an attached whistle and can switch to a flashing SOS mode.

Foxelli provides great service as well as a 12 month warranty for repair or exchange. If you are not 100% satisfied you can get your money back in the first 90 days.

Just for fun, I put this on Charlie.

My only complaint is that the button to turn the light on and off is a little tricky. It's a bit small, and you can't turn the light on with gloves.
