Gear Review: Roadhouse Brewery Seltzy’s

Gear Review: Roadhouse Brewery Seltzy's

Roadhouse Brewing's newest addition to the line up of drinks are hard seltzers, called "Seltzy". I've been on a big seltzer kick this summer so when I found out about Seltzy, I had to give them a try. They are sold locally in five states in including Utah, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, and their home state, Wyoming. Roadhouse Brewing has based in Jackson Hole since 2012, and they recently began to create these craft hard seltzers with zero added sugar and water from the Tetons!

Gear Review: ZOLEO Satellite Communicator

ZOLEO is one of the newest satellite communicators on the market, and on our big 5 night, 6 day trip to the Alice Toxaway Loop, I knew this was something I wanted to take along and test out. ZOLEO sends and receives messages via the Iridium global satellite network when you are in the backcountry. Using the ZOLEO device itself along with the app (required for use), you can text messages via cellular or Wi-Fi when available - you won't even miss a message if the ZOLEO isn't turned on!

Gear Review: Lily Trotters Compression Socks

Lily Trotters is a women-based compression sock company, made for all athletes and any activity. Most people ask, "Aren't compression socks for old people or for those with medical conditions?" And the answer is no. Here's why you should consider wearing them, especially if you hike and/or run a lot. Compression socks make legs feel refreshed and energized by increasing blood flow from our legs to our heart, raising the blood oxygen level. In short, they minimize leg pain and cramping by reducing swelling in the ankles and feet. Most importantly, they can also help prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) - a life threatening blood clot that can occur in the legs.

Gear Review: Cure Hydration

Cure Hydration is one of the newer electrolyte drink powders on the market, and I'm always on the lookout for new brands to try. In summer, I always carry electrolytes with me for hotter days, when I work really hard and sweat a lot, or am higher up in elevation to prevent elevation sickness. I also enjoy new flavors to get that spitty taste out of my mouth and keep me hydrated when I don't feel like drinking plain water.

It seems every 6-8 months I need to hiking & trail running shoes because I wear out the tread so quickly from my high miles. Ruffwear Track Jacket for Pets

Ruffwear Track Jacket for Pets gear review, Hiking in Utah with Dogs, blaze orange for dogs

Last week we drove to two hours to reach a certain peak we wanted to hike up, only to have to turn around. Why? Once we got close to the trailhead, there were tons of hunters out in their blaze orange. One guy stopped us on our drive and said, "You got some blaze, right?" We kind of mumbled, and was very adamant about letting us know we wouldn't be very safe hiking without any orange on, especially having a dog that is colored like a deer. Needless to say, as soon as we got to the TH, we turned right around. As soon as we got into service I searched for the best blaze orange Dog vests so that we wouldn't run into this problem again.

NUUN Hydration Electrolytes

NUUN Hydration Electrolytes

This summer, I had noticed that whenever I summited a big peak, backpacked for miles on end, or did a trail run at a high altitude, I noticed that I would start to feel light headed and weak. That is NOT something you want happening at 10,000 + feet! I would drink plenty of water, eat snacks, yet I still didn't feel 100%. I knew I needed something else, but wasn't sure what it could be.

Merrell Capra Rapid Hiking Water Shoe

The Merrell Capra Rapid Hiking Water Shoe gear review

The Merrell Capra Rapid Hiking Water Shoe is my new favorite river shoe. I've been a Chaco lover for years, but found that after 8-9 miles in a river, the straps would rub my sensitive feet the wrong way. I started to look for a fully enclosed water shoe, so that dirt and rocks couldn't get in. I didn't want Keens because of how bulky they are, and the little holes that allow rocks to get in. I also didn't want to have to stop every few feet to empty my shoe.

I'm always in awe at the garage sales and what people will return as a "damaged" item. They hardly are ever ruined, only slightly worn (most of the time)! I've scored some great deals, but each garage sale is definitely hit or miss. I've also been able to pick up random items for my Backpacking Gear List throughout the years.

Darn Tough Socks

Darn Tough Socks gear review

I've been on the search for the best backpacking socks lately. With backpacking season about to start in Utah, I needed some quality socks that wouldn't rub, make me sweat, or make my feet feel on fire. I asked several Facebook groups if they prefer Darn Tough or Smartwool socks. 90% of the votes were for Darn Tough, so I decided to buy a pair from Amazon (which has 5 stars). After doing some research, I bought the Men's 1/4 Merino Wool Cushion Hiking socks. I have big feet (women's 10, and men's fit my wide feet). I normally hike in ankle socks, but for backpacking I like a little higher to keep my socks from slipping down past my ankles. Two of the biggest reasons I decided to buy Darn Tough over Smartwool were because they are made in Vermont, and offer a Lifetime Guarantee on each pair of socks.
