I found many velcro-style options for pretty cheap (around $20 on Amazon), but with all the running and jumping Charlie does, we needed something more secure. We own both Ruffwear’s Approach Pack for backpacking and the Ruffwear Quinzee Coat, so I figured they would have something. Sure enough, Amazon sells the Ruffwear Track Jacket for $40, a blaze orange, lightweight vest for dogs for superior visibility and protection from hunters.
The most important feature for us was buckles, not velcro. If you have a long haired dog, or one that likes to run and jump through brush, velcro will tear apart under your dogs belly. I didn’t realize that when I bought this, that they weren’t actual buckles, but more of a hook-style. It’s still better than velcro, but why didn’t Ruffwear just make them buckles? (Update 2020 they are now buckles!) One nice thing is that the velcro around the side adjustments wraps around to keep the un-used straps from flying around. There is a hook on each side of the vest.
The front part easily slips over your dogs head, and is made from mesh for breathability. With all Ruffwear coats/vests, there is a spot to write your dogs name and your phone number in case they (or the coat) gets lost.
Charlie tests out the Ruffwear Track Jacket. He is a 70 lb Golden Lab, and wears a size L/XL.
Side view of the Track Jacket. You can see that the jacket fits securely around his belly and around his neck. There are three spots where you can place a beacon light for extra visibility at night. There are also two reflective prints paralleling each side. The jacket itself is made of a light fabric, not plastic, so it is machine washable. Wash in cold water, then hang dry.
The mesh around the neck is flexible allowing for maximum movement of your dog, no matter how active they are.
I feel so much better that Charlie will be seen both on and off trails. We often hike on a hillside with no trail, and hunters could easily be in the area. Whether you are walking around the neighborhood, or hiking the trails, thisTrack Jacket combined with a collar light at night is sure to keep your dogs safe, seen, and protected.
